FAQs
How did it happen that Presbyterians and Disciples worship together?
First Presbyterian and First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) began working together over 10 years ago. The congregations shared a choir, choir director, organist, and accompanist. During those years ministers of both congregations worked together as well. The Disciples pastor (Rev. Laurie Lewis) moved to Manhattan, Ks and the two churches decided to continue their tradition of working together. Rev. Jennifer was called to serve part-time for both churches.
The sharing of musicians, worship leaders, and pastor eventually led to the churches worshipping together.
Aren’t there differences in worship between Presbyterian and Disciples of Christ churches?
Yes. The congregations had to navigate blending worship to accommodate both denominations. It was challenging to create an order of worship which honored the core beliefs of each group.
We remind ourselves each week that if there is an element of worship that is not comfortable for any of us, we are welcome to not participate in it.
The Presbyterians have learned to have Communion every week. The Disciples have learned the value of Confession and Pardon.
What can I expect when I visit?
Expect to be welcomed.
Worship begins at 10:00 but if you are late, still come. We are a casual congregation with people wearing anything from suits and ties to shorts and green hair.
We begin with a time of sharing joys and concerns. We have some announcements. Carol Hoyt plays a prelude to draw us into worship.
The bulletin will guide you through all the parts of the service. The screens are also available to help lead you.
We have scripture reading and prayer and a message. We sing songs and we have communion. The first Sunday of each month we do a “Presbyterian style” communion. The other Sundays are “Disciples of Christ style”.
We believe all are welcomed to the communion table just as we have been welcomed.
