Mothers of the Church

We just completed a worship series focused on the mothers of the church. We met women from the history of our congregation as well as a few of the women in scripture.

We remembered a few of the women who influenced our church. Not necessarily the ones who led great movements, like Julia Piper, or started missions that continue today, like Mary Hughes, Donna Seeley and Beverly Wood. We were thinking more about the women who worked quietly in the background to make sure the church kept going, that the children were taught, that those who could not make it to church were visited, and do all things that seem small but which are the heart of church.

There are women in every congregation who are doing this work and have done this work for centuries. They are the mothers of the church, serving Jesus by serving his flock. It is a great honor to walk the same streets they walked and to serve the same community they served.

Jesus told us to love God and to love our neighbors as ourselves. We give thanks to all the women in all the congregations in all the world who loved Jesus enough to make casseroles, to sew paraments, fix holes in the children’s pants, kept diligent records, or took the time to call on one another. As we remember our history, we celebrate our future. God is not done in Parsons. Great things are coming.
